Deaf Awareness Workshops for Theatres and Arts Organisations

The DH Ensemble can offer Deaf Awareness workshops targeted specifically at theatre venues, festivals or other arts organisations. We offer a safe, fun and relaxed space where attendees will feel comfortable to ask questions (we are aware that fear of embarrassment or worry about causing offence can be a barrier for some people to learning more about Deafness and disability).

Our workshops can cover:

  • General Deaf Awareness including role play situations

  • Tips for Box Office staff, Ushers and Bar/Cafe staff including role play situations

  • Things to consider if you have a Deaf artist performing in your venue

  • Tips for technical staff for technical rehearsals with Deaf artists

  • How to work with sign language interpreters

  • Information about captioning, theatrical sign language interpreters and other forms of access for Deaf and hard of hearing customers

  • Learning a few basic conversational phrases in British Sign Language (please note our Deaf artists are not qualified teachers and will not teach any more than a few simple phrases)

  • Other content as agreed at time of booking

Our previous clients include The Sick of the Fringe Festival, Poplar Union, The Vaults and National Festival of Youth Theatre Scotland.

All Deaf Awareness workshops are delivered by a Deaf artist. We believe Deaf Awareness should only be taught by a Deaf person. Our Deaf artist may be accompanied by a hearing artist who is also a registered or trainee interpreter, depending on the situation.

We can adapt these workshops to be delivered remotely.

* We do not run Deaf Awareness sessions for companies which do not have an arts focus. If you are looking for that, we suggest trying a Deaf-led charity or organisation which specialises in this area.
