Workshops and Masterclasses for Young People

DMH_9783.jpg

The DH Ensemble offer bespoke workshops and training for young people who want to develop their knowledge and skills in theatre. We have delivered workshops to young people across the UK using our unique approach.

The majority of our workshops have two facilitators, one Deaf and one hearing. Our workshops are accessible to both Deaf and hearing young people and any work that is created within them is accessible to Deaf and hearing audience members. We welcome disabled participants to our workshops - please let us know of any access needs in advance.

Theatres and Young Companies

We have partnered with theatres across the UK including Nottingham Playhouse, Southwark Playhouse Young Company, Solar Bear Deaf Youth Theatre and Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre.

Past workshops include:

Creating Autobiographical Theatre (accompanying our show People of the Eye)

Workshops bringing together Deaf and hearing young people to devise a performance

Visual Theatre

Creating Deaf and hearing accessible theatre

Acting techniques including physical theatre, Viewpoints, clowning and durational improvisation

Play theory and non verbal communication

Devising theatre

The workshop organised for our Young Company was fantastic. Months later, members of the group are still talking about what they took away from it. Providing a really unique approach to performing and devising, it opened up all of our eyes to new possibilities in the work we create.

Secondary Schools, Specialist Drama Schools or Colleges

Our work with schools can be tailored to the needs of the curriculum or needs of the group. For the last few years, we have run highly successful weekly workshops at the BRIT School on Creating Accessible Theatre with students in their Community Theatre course.

We also offered a follow up master class on Visual Shakespeare for students who had completed the first series of workshops.

Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for this year’s collaboration! Thank you so much for all of you work with the students they have gained so much and had a fantastic learning experience.

So pleased we could collaborate again and look forward to more in the future.
— Emma Balaam, teacher at The BRIT School

Primary Schools / Youth Clubs

We have partnered with Remark! to offer drama workshops to primary-age Deaf children in their playschemes and Deaf Youth Club, some of whom use sign language and some of whom use spoken English (and some who use both).

These workshops could be tailored to suit groups of Deaf and hearing children.
